What am I: Tiago Cartageno is crafting pure and powerful natural wines from his family's historic Douro property, Quinta Vila Rachel. Tiago joins a small but growing group of Portuguese winemakers who decline to use any added sulfur in their winemaking. These beauties are clean, full-bodied, and charismatic examples of a pristine and storied Douro terroir. They might be Tiago's first vintages flying solo, but his family's estate has produced grapes in the Douro for several generations.
Under Tiago's leadership, the Quinta's winemaking has moved towards a purely natural approach. The vineyards are farmed organically and are awaiting certification. This red wine comes from a 35-year-old vineyard and was pressed and fermented in stainless steel vats for 12 months, with an additional 12 months in bottle. No sulfites have been added. It is unfiltered and has a dark ruby color, with notes of dark berries, cocoa, spices, and jam. 250 bottles produced.
