What am I: What started as a thesis project for three friends attending enology school together has become one of the most exciting natural wine projects in Portugal. Vinhos Aparte brings a punk-rock/graffiti artist aesthetic to their winemaking, and it shows in their whimsical, fresh, fruity, and oh-so-funky wines. They may be grape-mad explorers in wine-based fun and craziness, but they are dead serious when it comes to making extraordinary wine.
Superavit means surplus in Portuguese, and while this wine is the mainstay entry-level entry for VA, it explodes with flavor, character, texture, and over-delivers on drinkability. This wine is a pounder, a guzzler, and should be your house wine. A 50/50 mix of Arinto and Fernao Pires, it is spontaneously fermented with skin contact in steel barrels and is just pure fruit and juice. The instructions on the top label encourage you to shake before opening.
