What am I: Quinta do Olival da Murta / Serra Oca Moscatel Graudo
Quinta do Olival da Murta has been in the same family for over four generations. It is located about 80km from Lisbon, on the Serra Montejunto, near the medieval town of Obidos. Serra Oca wines are hand-harvested from vineyards where organic practices are used, and the wine is fashioned in the cellar with no chemical additions through spontaneous fermentation. The farm is also well known throughout the area for its herb growing programs, reforestation efforts, and whole-system approach to agriculture.
Quinta do Olival da Murta / Serra Oca Moscatel Graudo is a dry Moscatel from the Graudo cultivar. This wine displays the bold, powerfully exotic floral aromas that Moscatels are famous for. It is spontaneously fermented on the skins for 10-days and develops some color from the maceration, making it fit both white and orange wine categories, depending on whose eyes are looking at the wine.
Here at Real Portuguese Wine, we have decided to classify it as an orange wine, given its deeper color and pronounced flavors that come from the maceration. The wine also hints at honey, mint, and pine in the nose, but the pallet is full of freshness, acidity, and a clean, quenching finish.
