What am I: Arribas Belfo Branco white wine
The Arribas Wine Company project began in 2017, when winemakers Frederico Machado and Ricardo Alves decided that the time to start a more personal project had arrived. The quest for diversity and a spot with unique characteristics took them to Bemposta, a small village in the far north of Portugal. This just happened to be near Mogadouro, where the grandparents of one of the founders were born. There they found very old vineyards, some of them recently abandoned.
Arribas Belfo white wine is not just about the wine. Made from old vineyards from Peredo de Bemposta, Belfo helps to support the work of AEPGA (Associação para o Estudo e Proteção do Gado Asinino) in the preservation of the Donkey of Miranda.
Miranda’s donkey was used in the production of vintages on the cliffs high above the Douro River. With the mechanization of agriculture, animal work was replaced by tractors. Arribas hopes to revive the use of the donkey in winemaking, preserving a tradition as well as modernizing its use.
With every purchase of a bottle of Arribas Belfo branco, a percentage is donated to AEPGA… so have a glass for the Donkey de Miranda! Belfo also means someone who talks with their mouth full, and one sip of this and you know that it is true!
Whole bunch and pressed by foot. Aged in barrels for 10 months (5 used and 1 new). 6-8 hours of skin maceration.
