What am I: Quinta do Olival da Murta / Serra Oca Branco
Quinta do Olival da Murta has been in the same family for over four generations. It is located about 80km from Lisbon, on the Serra Montejunto, near the medieval town of Obidos. Serra Oca wines are hand-harvested from vineyards where organic practices are used, and the wine is fashioned in the cellar with no chemical additions through spontaneous fermentation. The farm is also well known throughout the area for its herb growing programs, reforestation efforts, and whole-system approach to agriculture.
Serra Oca Branco is made by total destemming of the grapes without crushing, spontaneous fermentation in lagar of the 3 grape varieties separately. Arinto and Fernão Pires are used, with skin maceration and fermentation in barrel. Moscatel was fermented with skin maceration in the style of orange wine. Minimum addition of sulfur.
Part of the batch was aged in used French oak barrels and the remaining part of the batch was with stainless steel.
Serra Oca Branco white wine is golden yellow in color, with an aroma of minerals, floral nuances, vegetables, and dried fruit notes. It is very intense and fresh on the palate.
