The Arribas Wine Company project began in 2017, when Frederico Machado and Ricardo Alves decided that the time to start a more personal project had arrived, reflecting their own philosophy and winemaking style. The quest for diversity and a spot with unique characteristics took them to Bemposta, a small village in the far north near Mogadouro, where the grandparents of one of the founders were born. There they found very old vineyards, some of them recently abandoned due to the owners old age.
The grapes that make up Quilómetro come from two old vineyards that are very close to the Douro river and that were the very first to be harvested in the 2019 vintage. The varietal mix is very rich, with roughly 70%-30% proportions of red grapes and white grapes, respectively, which gives them quite a unique character.
The grapes were hand-harvested and whole bunch foot trodden in a traditional stone lagar, where they fermented and macerated for 4 days. After that time, the grapes were pressed and the wine was racked into used French oak barrels. The fractions of the wine at pressing were separated. The freerun was taken out by gravity, with no further extraction brought on by the press, and racked into 3 barrels separate from the pressed wine, in order to preserve the purity of the juice and to truly see how the different fractions behaved. Those 3 barrels make up Quilómetro. The wine is an expression of the pure, elegant, and delicate side that the old vineyards can show.
