What am I: Casa de Mouraz is married couple Sara Dionísio and Antonio Ribeiro. One of the early adopters of organic viticulture in the Dão region, their wines have become reference points for fresh, natural, yet affordable wines that speak to the authentic grapes and landscapes of this important appellation.
In the summer of 2017, tragedy befell the couple when many of their most prized vineyards were destroyed in terrible fires that blanketed the region. Like a phoenix, Mouraz has risen from the ashes, replanting the vineyards with a focus on fresh young wines. These new wines reinforce Casa de Mouraz’s place as one of the most important organic wine producers in Portugal.
Planet Mouraz Chibu 2018 / Casa de Mouraz, from this new more experimental line of wines, is a perfect wine for the times. It is an outstanding expression of old-school Dão winemaking done naturally. Chibu is a mix of organic red and white varieties, blended together in lagar (open tank). The grapes are foot trodden and then undergo spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeast. Gently pressed in an old school basket press, and then moved to stainless steel before being bottled, this wine is full of wild berry flavors, youthful vigor, bright acidity and just enough tannin to give it backbone.
Similar to the Nina red, but with a higher percentage of red grapes, Chibu is a slightly more rustic, more tannic, and more peppery member of the Planet Mouraz line. Very little sulfur is added, and the dried flowers of the chestnut tree are used as a natural anti-oxidant in the winemaking process.
Chibu the goat gets winemaking credits like his buddies Nina and Bolinha.
