What am I: Quinta da Costa do Pinhão is an old Douro Valley estate with over 6 generations of history. It is located in the heart of the Pinhão river valley which sits high above the Douro River. Miguel Morais inherited the property in 2006, and set about to gradually turn the vineyards over to certified organic practices, and apply natural winemaking philosophy in the cellar. The vineyard comprises a mix of plots, with the oldest being over 80 years of age, with altitudes ranging from 250 to 500 meters above sea level.
Miguel’s goal is to make wines where freshness, spice, and vineyard character overtake the more classically know power-fruit driven wines of Douro’s past. The wines are all fermented spontaneously in traditional stone lagar, and the winery takes advantage of its natural hillside location so that gravity can move the wine rather than pumping.
Quinta da Costa do Pinhão Peladosa 2015 is from the oldest section of this vineyard with vines over 80 years old. This is the most profound and age-worthy wine the estate produces, and it is an intense and meditative expression of Douro red wine. The nose explodes with spice, tobacco, and dark red fruits. The palate is broad, concentrated, and clearly still young enough to soften more with some cellar aging. If you seek terroir-specific, age-worthy and powerful Douro red wine, made in a natural and minimalist fashion, this is your wine.
