Quinta do Romeu Especial Tinto

What am I: Quinta do Romeu has belonged to the Menéres family since 1874, and is currently in the hands of the 5th generation. The vineyards, olive groves, cork trees, and two streams coexist in Romeu intertwined in a natural way, forming a living mosaic.

They grow 25 hectares of vineyards that are the northernmost in the demarcated Douro region. Although with the robust character of the Douro, they have the elegance and freshness of this unique place. Romeu has a great dedication to the quality of the grape and, in the cellar, everything happens with a minimum of interference.

Red fermentations are made in granite presses, indigenous yeasts, reduced amounts of SO2 used, and wine ages in mostly used barrels. All agriculture at Quinta do Romeu is certified organic. In 2012 the farm was converted to biodynamics. In Romeu, nothing is flat- neither the landscape, nor the climate, nor the people… nor the aromas!

To make the Quinta do Romeu Especial Tinto, the grapes are spontaneously co-fermented in a granite lagar. The wine is then aged for 12 months in Austrian oak barrels with a light toast, both new and used. This wine is not filtered or stabilized by the cold.

Intense and deep ruby red in color, it is both complex and austere. Aromas of fruits of the forest stand out, as well as wildflowers, balm, and spices. Elegant, medium-bodied palate with a textured body in a dense structure as well as good concentration with fresh acidity. This wine has a very long and balanced finish.
